A driving road test is one of two things that stand between a driving student and a driver license. The written driving test is the other obstacle that must be overcome. Many driving students dread this exam more than they do getting behind the wheel for the road test. They should not worry because proper preparation will make the written test seem like a piece of cake!
An official driver handbook is an invaluable study resource that can be ordered, downloaded, or picked up from a driver licensing office in the state of residence. If you have trouble locating this office online, some Websites aggregate this information. Simply select the state of residence to be taken to the website for the state driver agency.
Using New Jersey as an example, the Motor Vehicle Commission offers a manual that prepares individuals for the knowledge test, which is the replacement for the written, paper-based test. The manual is available in PDF format and includes chapters on driver rules, rules of the road, defensive driving, driving privileges and penalties, driving under the influence, and sharing the road. Also included are chapters devoted to information about the NJ driver license, steps in getting a license, and information about automobiles.
While reading through the manual, take notes to assist with studying. Right-of-way rules, meanings of road signs, and speed limits in different areas are topics that tend to confuse students so these deserve extra attention. Third-party websites offer cheat sheets for study purposes. These feature a list of questions and other preparation for the test including traffic signals and signs.
Practice reinforces what is learned through reading and studying a driving manual. Many states offer practice tests online or in paper form at no charge. Students learn about the types of questions asked on the actual exam and test their skills by answering these. A grade is provided when the practice test is submitted, causing test takers to be serious about their efforts. The pressure will only be more intense when taking the real exam so this is a helpful simulation.
Preparing far in advance will increase confidence on test day. Schedule the exam far enough out to allow ample study time. Get a good sleep the night before the exam and eat a healthy breakfast before heading to the testing center. Mastering the information should make the test a relatively short and painless process that puts you one step closer to a driver license!
